Steel Door Fire Ratings

Fire rated doors are specialized doors designed to resist the spread of fire and smoke within a building, providing crucial protection for occupants and the property. These doors are constructed using materials and designs that have been tested and certified to withstand fire for a specified period, typically measured in minutes. Fire ratings range from 20 minutes to 3 hours and Hollow metal is the only door material widely available with a 3 hour label.

20 Minute Fire Label
Used in one-hour rated walls to separate corridors where smoke and draft control are a possible issue

45 Minute Fire Label
Required in one-hour rated walls that serve as room partitions or divide corridors within a building. Installed in exterior door openings, particularly where there is a possibility of light to moderate fire exposure from the outside

90 Minute Fire Label
Required in two-hour rated wall openings to stairwells, elevator rooms, or egress through a building. Used in exterior openings where there is a potential for severe fire exposure from outside.

3 Hour Fire Label
Usually required in four hour rated walls that separate buildings or that divide a large building into smaller fire areas.

Steel Door Institute Fire Rating Requirements

  • Fire ratings are granted by third-party testing agencies and are labeled on the products
  • The doors must meet the requirements of the International Building and International Fire Codes, as well as NFPA 80
  • Building codes dictate the fire rating requirements for the wall. This is based on the location of the wall, building use, and more. The fire rating of the wall dictates the required fire rating of the door.
  • Fire doors are required to be self closing and positive latching.
